Savouring the Sabbath part 4

The Sabbath Becomes Burdensome When God Is Not Wholly Our God

A car lover commanded to take a day off work to enjoy cars will not experience such a command as a burden. Likewise the Christian who truly loves God will relish the opportunity the Sabbath command affords. If the command to spend a day focused on God seems burdensome or boring, then we need to check our hearts. We have perhaps become blinded to the glory and excellence of God. There is no greater blessing than for God to command us to enjoy Him. There is no greater joy to be had than the joy of being with God.

You make known to me the path of life; in Your presence there is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (Psalm 16:11)

The Sabbath rest is a foretaste of the greater rest to come when we will spend eternity enjoying God (see Hebrews 4). It is a small taste of heaven on earth. Surely heaven is not burdensome. It is only if we love other things more. Test your heart.
