Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath,…(1 Corinthians 9:25)
Athletes are the perfect example of self-control. They diligently keep themselves on strict diets and fitness regimens. The athlete who doesn't won’t be one for long.
Why do they exercise such self-control? Paul says, ‘they do it to receive a perishable wreath’. In other words, they exercise self-control because they want something. Here is the secret to self-control. Athletes want the prize of the wreath more than they want whatever tempts them to give up their diet or training. The honour and glory of the wreath is more desirable to them than the temporary enjoyment of a donut or a sleep-in.
Self-control grows out of desires. The Holy Spirit cultivates the fruit of self-control by watering godly wants. When it comes to self control, you must ask yourself what you want. When your desire to glorify God becomes dominant, your life will be reined in and ruled for righteousness.
